The Role of Philanthropic Institutions in Indonesia’s Economic Empowerment Landscape

This document explores the strategic role of philanthropic institutions in advancing economic empowerment through the strengthening of Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs). Developed collaboratively, the publication offers reflections, data, and policy recommendations aimed at building a more inclusive and sustainable economic ecosystem through cross-sector collaboration. BISA Ruang Nuswantara contributed to the development of this strategic paper.
MSEs play a vital role in Indonesia’s economic structure, particularly in driving more equitable and inclusive economic growth. However, many MSEs continue to face significant challenges, including limited access to capital, low levels of technology adoption, and insufficient training in business management and digital skills. These barriers hinder their ability to adapt and remain resilient in the face of market dynamics and evolving economic challenges.
Moreover, regional disparities further exacerbate the situation, especially in rural areas where outreach and MSE development programs remain limited. For this reason, empowering MSEs is not only a critical agenda for strengthening the people’s economy but also a key driver for fostering more inclusive and sustainable growth across Indonesia.
